Isaiah 53:2-3 (NLT)
“My servant grew up in the Lord’s presence like a tender green shoot, like a root in dry ground. There was nothing beautiful or majestic about his appearance, nothing to attract us to him. He was despised and rejected— a man of sorrows, acquainted with deepest grief. We turned our backs on him and looked the other way. He was despised, and we did not care.”
Welcome to “Jesus was Ugly Part 2″… Just as we read in yesterday’s post, Jesus did not show up as a rock star. Or an earthly king. Or even your basic handsome guy. He was plain and even maybe a little homely looking. Just sitting on that for a minute makes you question what this world values about a person and why. We are attracted to beautiful things, and yet God did not choose to use this fact to get Jesus as many followers as possible.
I remember singing a hymn as a child, “Man of Sorrows.” You can click to read the lyrics, but what I remember most is that I could never quite sing the last verse without choking up. The whole song describes vividly how Jesus was despised and rejected, bore our sins on the cross, and is coming in a triumphant return. The music would crescendo, the pastor’s arms raised high to lead us in a dramatic finish. Singing of Jesus’ return gets me every time.
Jesus was grieved in some of the deepest ways imaginable, yet he did not hold that against us. He still died, raised back to life, and continues the mission to bring us all back to life with him. The last words of today’s verses rock me to my core: “we did not care.” Humanity has to own that collectively. We all did not care as we murdered the Son of God. That should grieve our spirits, yet bring us to tears of disbelief and joy at the unimaginable wonder of salvation. We did not care. But he did. And he still does.
